The Talbot County Health Department is hosting a health fair for the watermen of Talbot County.
The event, scheduled to take place on Saturday, February 3, 2024 from 11:00am-3:00pm at the Tilghman Island Fire Hall, will provide health screenings and information about heart health and blood pressure, diabetes, colon cancer, vision and hearing, and HIV and Hepatitis testing.
Watermen will be provided lunch and will receive a $50 fuel card for their completion of screening services. The Talbot County Health Department will be providing COVID-19 and Flu vaccinations. Additional services offered will include smoking cessation information, Narcan training and healthcare enrollment assistance.
According to Jeff Harrison of the Talbot Watermen’s Association, “We’re excited to partner with the Talbot County Health Department to provide important health services to those that work so hard to support our county.”
The watermen that work within the estimated 600 miles of tidal shoreline in Talbot County oftentimes have reduced access to health services due to long working hours and self-employment. The health fair event was created with the purpose of bringing health services to the estimated 500 watermen within the county.
“We at the Health Department are grateful for the contribution that the Talbot watermen make to our community and hope that by hosting this event, we can make it easier for watermen to access these important health services and optimize their health,” said Dr. Maria Maguire, Talbot County Health Officer.
Participants are encouraged to RSVP for the event by reaching out via email at talbot.health@maryland.org. Walk-ins are welcomed.
