A CELEBRATION OF PLACE FOR PEOPLE WHO LIVE HERE

Ten Easton-based nonprofits will come together, along with local restaurants and businesses, to create CommUNITY Day: Easton Arts & Culture Celebration.

This new event for Talbot County intends to give local residents a way to be outside, support local businesses and enjoy each other’s company during the fall season.

Partners in this weekend offering things to do or see that showcases their community commitment and their individual missions. Some programs will be offered on both days, and some just on Saturday, with programs ranging from family art activities, learning about feeding birds and bird watching, educational lectures, a drive through art gallery, conservation activities, music and many more.

While some activities will be indoors, many will be outside scattered across various locations in Easton to help people remain socially distant and safe. Most activities are free and some require pre-registration.

Every participating organization is following agreed-upon COVID-related safety protocols, including wearing a mask in indoor spaces, limiting family groups to six people and ensuring groups or individuals are safely six feet apart.

Share our summer campers’ favorite activity with your whole family! Summer is the best time to find newly hatched turtles and tadpoles of all shapes and colors – or, just play in the mud! Come in water shoes and shorts and be prepared to get muddy.

Explore the evening skies on the longest day of the year with Pickering Creek naturalists! As the sun sets, set your senses free while walking the trails of the 410-acre wildlife sanctuary and listening for the sounds of the nocturnal world. Test your night vision by looking for owls, bats, opossum and fox under darkening skies. Catch fireflies and gaze at the stars to kick off a summer full of wonder!

Spring and Summer is the time for birds! Bring your 3 to 5 year old to a fun morning of learning about our backyard birds, going on a bird hike, and searching for early nests. The little explorers will go home with window clings to help keep our local birds safe while living among us in our neighborhoods.

Discover the slippery, slimy, and scaly creatures that call the wetlands at Pickering Creek home! Equipped with chest waders, boots, and large seine nets, we’ll spend the evening exploring and investigating a mysterious, watery world filled fish, frogs, and plenty of mud!

Enjoy the first signs of spring on this stroll through the woodlands of Pickering Creek. As the days are getting longer and warmer, we’ll look for birds singing their spring songs before they are hidden by new tree leaves and learn to identify early emerging woodland plants.

As winter breaks and spring begins to emerge the timberdoodle awakens. At dusk the male woodcock spirals into the sky, creating a trilling sound with its wings. Then he descends, fluttering, warbling and zigzagging back to the spot he began. This unusual mating ritual will take place in Pickering Creeks’ warm season grass meadows provide ideal habitat for this annual late winter event.

Though the cold may keep us inside – many animals stay active all winter long! Explore the outdoors with your 3 to 5 year old and Pickering Naturalists as we discover our winter forests. We’ll learn to identify winter birds and mammal tracks and go home with a fun craft!

Bands, businesses and local organizations get together to celebrate the town’s Irish roots at the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

2016 JUNETEENTH TO CELEBRATE HERITAGE IN ART AND STORIES

2016 Juneteenth Celebration
Saturday, June 18, 2016, 10 am – 4pm
Held at the Academy Art Museum

The Academy Art Museum and the Frederick Douglass Honor Society are hosting the 5th annual Juneteenth Celebration on Friday, June 17 at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, June 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Academy Art Museum in Easton, MD. The theme of this year’s celebration is “Celebrating Our Heritage in Art and Stories.”

Juneteenth, one of the most important African American holidays in the country, marks the abolition of slavery. The Celebration will commemorate Emancipation Day, celebrate the significant contributions of African Americans in our country, and reflect on the common values that we share as a community.

This year’s program will include a variety of free events. First, the exhibition, Ruth Starr Rose (1887 – 1965): Revelations of African American Life in Maryland and the World, will be on view in the Waterfowl Building in Easton throughout the Juneteenth Celebration. This comprehensive exhibition offers a rare glimpse into African American life at the turn of the century on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Many of the subjects are descendants of Frederick Douglass and Harriet Ross Tubman. Second, the exhibition, Ernie Satchell: A Few of MY Favorite Things (June 17 – August 7, 2016) features the ceramics of artist Ernest Satchell, a native of the Eastern Shore and retired professor from UMES. Finally, on Saturday there will be a keynote talk by Carole Boston Weatherford, Professor and Director of the Professional Writing Program at Fayetteville State University in Fayetteville, NC, and author of the award winning children’s book, Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom.

Other activities include the acknowledgement of 2016 Juneteenth Honorees Jeffery Moaney, Barbara Paca, and St. Matthew United Methodist Church, as well as performances by local church choirs, art projects for children and families, craft displays, food, and a knowledge village in the block of South Street between the Museum and the Waterfowl Building.

On Sunday, May 22, 2016, the 18-acre waterfront campus of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum will transform into festival grounds as the museum hosts its Community Block Party. Underwritten by a large number of generous community sponsors, the Block Party is offered free of charge and open to the general public. It will feature several performance stages, free boat rides, live music, regional foods and libations, Chesapeake-related family activities, and more.

Save the planet and get creative! Come to the Academy Art Museum’s eARTh Day Art Extravaganza and make some great projects by reusing all kinds of materials. The event is offered at the Museum, 106 South St in Easton on Saturday, April 9 from 10 am – 1 pm and was co-developed with the MidShore Riverkeeper Conservancy. The event is for kids ages 6+ and parents can stay for free! For more information, please call 410-822-2787.
